Patriot Women leave Camels thirsting for goals; FMU wins 2-0

FLORENCE, SC – Junior Angela Salem and freshman Amanda Hall each scored first-half goals and the Francis Marion University defense claimed its third straight shutout as the Patriots blanked Campbell University 2-0, Saturday afternoon (Nov. 1) in women’s soccer action.

The Senior Day victory ends the 2008 season for FMU. The Patriots (6-12-1) opened the year by dropping their first nine matches, but closed the campaign by posting a 6-3-1 mark over the final 10 contests. Francis Marion also ends the season not having allowed a goal over the past 364:58.

Campbell ends its regular season with a 5-10-3 record.

Salem’s 6-yard shot in the third minute, following a short cross from freshman Kiley Williams, gave Francis Marion an early 1-0 advantage. The lead swelled to 2-0 at the 20:36 mark when Hall took a service from Margaret Fanning and scored on a 12-yard shot from the left side.

The Patriot defense and junior goalkeeper Emily Brandenburg would make that margin stand up. Brandenburg, who has been in goal for the long defensive scoreless streak, made two saves on Saturday.

Campbell freshman goalkeeper Jamie Panfil recorded three saves. Campbell outshot the Patriots 9-7, but FMU led 5-2 in shots-on-goal. The Camels also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Williams nearly scored a third FMU goal in the 86th minute when she intercepted a pass from Panfil, but Williams’ quick attempt was blocked by a diving Panfil.

Defender Brandi Bonifay and midfielder Kiersten Nedervelt, Francis Marion’s two seniors, were both honored before the match. Bonifay started all 71 matches over the past four years. FMU also ended its home season with a 5-2-1 mark pushing the program’s all-time record on the FMU Soccer Field to 93-18-6.
