FLORENCE, SC – Senior leadoff hitter Quentin Davis continued his hot hitting with two hits and a pair of runs scored as Francis Marion University improved to 4-0 for the first time in five seasons with a 9-1 non-conference win over St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Thursday afternoon (Feb. 10) in college baseball action.
Five Patriot pitchers limited St. Andrews (2-4) to nine hits and a lone run that came in eighth inning with FMU already up 8-0. Freshman righty Dusty Floyd was the second of the FMU hurlers and earned his first collegiate victory.
Davis also drove in one run with a fielder’s choice ground ball. Patriot third baseman Omar Quiles was two-for-four with a pair of runs scored, while junior shortstop Jason Weaver was two-for-five with an RBI. FMU also took advantage of five wild pitches, a balk, and two errors by the Knights.
Third baseman Brad Smith plated St. Andrews’ lone run with an eighth-inning double. Smith also recorded a third-inning single, while center fielder Marc Hammonds tallied three singles in four at bats.
Sophomore left-hander Ryan Curley was tagged with the loss after he allowed eight runs (five earned) in six innings.
FMU will open Peach Belt Conference play this weekend at 18th-ranked Georgia College & State University. The two squads will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. FMU has won five of its last six games against nationally ranked opponents.
