Patriots Upset ASU 7-6 in 12 ; Snap Barth's Streak

FLORENCE, SC – Senior center fielder Quentin Davis scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 12th inning to give Francis Marion University a 7-6 victory over 11th-ranked Augusta State University, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 26) in Peach Belt Conference baseball action, and in the process the Patriots halted Sam Barth's record-setting hitting streak at 47 games.

FMU improves to 8-5 overall and 2-5 in the PBC, while ASU, playing its first road contest of the season, falls to 10-4 and 4-3.

Freshman righty Dylan Owen and senior reliever Mitch Norris (1-1) combined to stop Barth's streak.  The senior catcher grounded out twice, flied out to right, popped up to second, was hit by a pitch and walked intentionally once (in the third inning) to end the streak.  Barth had set a new NCAA Division II mark last Wednesday when he hit safely in his 47th consecutive game.  The streak began on March 14 of last season against Armstrong Atlantic State University.

Francis Marion's winning rally in the 12th frame began when Davis stroked a leadoff single.  He was sacrificed to second, and following an intentional walk to Michael Ward, Davis took third on a fielder's choice grounder by Justin Greene.  With Bert Rollins at the plate, ASU left-hander Dallas LeMaster (0-1) unleashed the wild pitch that allowed Davis to score.

Ward was one of six Patriots with two hits, but he drove in three runs with a pair of doubles.  Stan Markle  doubled and singled while driving in one run and scoring once.  Omar Quiles, FMU's lead-off batter extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a two-for-six performance.  Jason Weaver, Davis, and freshman designated hitter Danny Mattonelli were the other FMU players with two hits.

Norris pitched the final four innings to pick up the win, although he allowed ASU two runs in the top of the ninth inning that forced extra innings.

Second baseman Lee Rose was the lone Jaguar with more than one hit, as he was two-for-six with a double, a run scored, and two RBIs.  Shortstop Bennett Mayfield delivered a run-scoring double in the ninth inning that knotted the game at 6-6.

Francis Marion led 6-0 entering the seventh inning behind the pitching of Owen, but ASU rallied for four runs on four hits, a sacrifice fly, and two passed balls.

The two squads will play a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m. on FMU's Cormell Field.
