Patriots Edge No. 11 ASU 7-6 Again, Then Rain

FLORENCE, SC – Senior center fielder Quentin Davis recorded his second four-hit game of the season, including a two-run home run, to power Francis Marion University past 11th-ranked Augusta State University 7-6, Sunday afternoon (Feb. 27) in the first game of a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader.

The second game was suspended by rain in the top of the eighth inning with the score tied at 3-3.  The game will be resumed Monday at 3 p.m.

FMU is now 9-5 overall and 3-5 in the PBC, while ASU drops to 10-5 and 4-4.

Davis drove in three runs and also stole a base.  His two-run homer in the fourth inning staked FMU sophomore lefty Lee Tabor (2-1) to a 6-1 advantage.  After ASU rallied with three runs in the fifth frame, Patriot sophomore right-hander Brooks Sinquefield pitched the final four inning to earn his first career save.

Sinquefield limited ASU to only one hit through his first three innings, but allowed three walks and a two-run single in the top of the ninth.  However, he induced Micah Hollis to ground out with the tying run in scoring position to preserve the win.

Like Davis, ASU shortstop Bennett Mayfield also went four-for-four and he drove in five of the Jaguars’ six runs.  He had an RBI-single in the first and a pair of two-run singles (in the fifth and ninth innings).

Jaguar left fielder Brandon Sumlin was one-for-three with two RBIs and a run scored.

ASU righty Max Fischer (2-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing 10 hits and six earned runs in four innings.

FMU shortstop Jason Weaver was three-for-five, while second baseman Omar Quiles extended his hitting streak to 14 games with two hits, two RBIs, and a run scored.
