Davis' Slam Lifts FMU Past Bulldogs 7-4

FLORENCE, SC – Senior center fielder Quentin Davis collected two hits, including a grand slam home run, and scored three times to lift 28th-ranked Francis Marion University to a 7-4 win over Barton College, Wednesday afternoon (March 9) in non-conference baseball action.

The win was FMU's seventh in its last nine games and ups the Patriots' record to 14-6-1.  Barton drops to 10-15.

Francis Marion senior right-hander Chas Dobes (3-1) picked up the win, while freshman righty Dylan Owen notched his first career save with a scoreless ninth inning.  Sophomore Brooks Sinquefield allowed only one hit and no runs in 2.2 innings of work.

Davis' grand slam over the right field fence staked FMU to a 4-0 lead in the third inning.  First baseman Luke Ogletree stroked a two-run single down the right field line in the fifth frame to give the Patriots a 6-1 advantage.  After Barton pulled to within 6-4, catcher Michael Ward accounted for FMU's final run with an RBI single to center in the seventh inning.

Both Davis and Ogletree collected two hits, while designated hitter Alex Blake went three-for-four.  FMU leadoff hitter Omar Quiles was held hitless for only the second time in the Patriots' 21 contests, although he did reach base and scored once.

Starter Robert Malkmus (1-1) took the loss for Barton.  Brock Godwin, Dennis Blackmon, and Tyler Petty all had two hits for the Bulldogs.

FMU will play host to 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke for a three-game Peach Belt Conference series this weekend, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
