#28 Patriots Complete Baseball Sweep of #21 UNCP

FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore Brooks Sinquefield and senior Mitch Norris combined on a four-hitter and 28th-ranked Francis Marion University took advantage of some base-running miscues by 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke to claim a 3-2 win over the Braves on Sunday afternoon (March 13) and complete a sweep of a three-game Peach Belt Conference baseball series.

Francis Marion is 11-1-1 in its last 13 contests and improves to 18-6-1 overall and 8-6-1 in the PBC, while UNCP drops to 18-10 and 5-7.

Sinquefield (2-2) allowed two runs on two hits in five innings, while for the second straight Sunday, Norris notched a four-inning save.  UNCP righty Mike Mattox (4-1) suffered his first defeat of 2005, although he allowed only one earned run on seven hits in his eight innings.

FMU senior center fielder Quentin Davis was two-for-two with a run batted in and two stolen bases.  Junior third baseman Brian McFadden was two-for-four with a run scored and an RBI.

FMU, which has not trailed in its last seven games, went ahead 1-0 on an RBI-single by Davis in the bottom of the first inning.  The lead grew to 3-0 in the second frame, when McFadden blooped an RBI single to right center field and two batters later, Justin Greene plated McFadden with a sacrifice fly down thew right field line.

UNCP scored its two runs in the fourth inning when Robbie Redic scored on a wild pitch by Sinquefield and Chris Beck drove home Jason Morales with a sacrifice fly to left field.  The Braves were limited to only three runs on eight hits in the series’ 25 innings.

The Braves hurt their own cause on the basepaths.  UNCP’s first two batters of the game reached base, but Ty Morris was then picked off second base.  In the second frame, Quincy Wyche was hit by a pitch, but then he was gunned down to go from first to third on an infield ground out.  FMU catcher Michael Ward threw out Cole Franks trying to steal second in the fifth inning.

FMU plays at St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Wednesday at 2 p.m.
