#13 Patriots Split Double Dip With USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, SC – USC Upstate pitcher Scott Eckard pitched seven innings of three-hit ball to give the Spartans the game-one victory while Francis Marion University's Luke Ogletree drove in the winning run in game two to give 13th-ranked FMU a doubleheader split with USC Upstate, Saturday afternoon at Harley Park.  The Spartans won game one 6-1, while the Patriots pulled out a game-two win 3-2.

FMU saw its eight-game winning streak snapped in game one, but the Patriots improved to 20-7-1 overall and 10-7-1 in PBC play with the game-two victory. USC Upstate moves to 18-12 and 5-10.

The Patriots play at Wingate University, Tuesday at 6 p.m.

In the opener, the Spartans struck for a run in the first.  Bret Hansen singled, advanced two bases with two outs, and then scored on a throwing error by FMU shortstop Jason Weaver to give USC Upstate an early 1-0 lead.

USC Upstate increased its lead to 4-0 in the second frame.  Jim Kais singled and scored on a one-out double by Eric Davis.  Brad Wingo then stepped up and delivered a two-run triple to make the score 4-0.  The Spartans upped its margin to 6-0 in the sixth.  Andrew Maddox walked and scored on a RBI-triple by Davis, who then scored on another fielding error by Weaver.

Francis Marion plated its lone run in the seventh inning when pinch-runner John Caneda scored on a fielder's choice, making the score 6-1.

Davis led USC Upstate in hitting going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. 

Eckard (4-2) pitched 4.1 innings of no-hit ball for the Spartans while striking out nine batters.  Brooks Sinquefield (2-3) took the loss for FMU.  With the victory in game one, head coach Matt Fincher received his 150th career victory at USC Upstate.

In game two, the Spartans would score first, with a run in the second.  Kais walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Maddox.  Ross Vigder then roped a single to center to score Kais and give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

The Patriots scored two runs in the fourth when Quentin Davis tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ogletree to tie the game at 1-1.  Pinch-hitter Bert Rollins doubled down the left-field line to score Nick Stewart and put the Patriots up 2-1.

Francis Marion later increased its lead to 3-1 when Ogletree singled home Weaver from second with two outs with what would prove to be the game-winning run.

The Spartans cut the Patriot lead to one at 3-2, but a seventh-inning rally faltered and the Patriots escaped with a game-two victory.

John Caddell was 2-for-3 at the plate in game two to lead the Spartans in hitting.  Ogletree led the Patriots in game two, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
