#15 Francis Marion Splits Baseball DH with AASU

SAVANNAH, GA – Sophomore left-hander Lee Tabor tossed a five-hit shutout as 15th-ranked Francis Marion University downed Armstrong Atlantic State University 11-0 on Sunday afternoon to earn a split of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.

AASU won the first game, 7-2, handing Francis Marion freshman Dylan Owen (5-2) his first loss after four straight PBC wins.

In the opener, AASU (24-9, 6-8 PBC) got a two-run double from Miguel Donate in the bottom of the first to grab an early 2-0 lead.  Timely hits led to single runs in the second and third innings as two-out RBI singles by Jonnie Geiger and Sean Hotzak built AASU's lead to 4-0. A three-run spot in the fifth concluded the scoring for the Pirates, while Francis Marion (28-13-1, 15-11-1 PBC) collected two runs in the sixth on Michael Ward's two-RBI double.

Jon Troop improved to 9-2 on the season with the victory in game one, going seven innings and giving up six hits and two runs while striking out seven. Owen exited after three-plus innings, giving up six hits and four runs.

Game two was all Francis Marion as the Patriots plated six runs in the top of the first inning  against AASU starter Chase Leatherwood (7-3). Four errors, three walks and three base hits in the frame put the Patriots on top, 6-0, and the Pirates never threatened in the ballgame afterwards.

Tabor improved to 7-3 as he fanned two, while Leatherwood was tagged for six hits and eight runs – three earned – in four innings of work.

Jonnie Geiger and Sean Hotzak each had three hits apiece in the doubleheader to lead the Pirates offensively, while Francis Marion was paced by Omar Quiles' five hits, including a 4-for-5 performance in game two.  FMU sophomore right fielder Nick Stewart had two hits and four RBIs in the game two rout.

Patriot shortstop Jason Weaver had a pair of hits in both games of the twinbill.

FMU plays host to Barton College, Wednesday at 7 p.m. on Cormell Field.
