#15 Patriots Sweep Bearcats to Reach 30 Wins

GREENWOOD - Fifteenth-ranked Francis Marion University came from behind to win game one, then completed a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader sweep over Lander University Saturday afternoon (April 16) at Legion Field behind senior centerfielder Quentin Davis' six hits and senior first baseman Luke Ogletree's four runs batted in.

The Patriots won the opener 7-4 and followed up with a 9-2 victory in  game two. Francis Marion captured two games in the three-game series, improving to 30-14-1 overall and 17-12-1 in the Peach Belt, ggod for fourth place.  The Bearcats fall to 23-22 and 9-14.

FMU plays host to Limestone College, Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Francis Marion rallied from a late 3-1 deficit in Game one, spoiling a strong outing by Lander starting pitcher Chris Marks. The Patriots tied it 3-3 in the top of the eighth inning on infield singles by Davis and Jason Weaver, and a two-run double by Ogletree. Tyler Addison relieved Marks with one out and prevented further damage, stranding the potential go-ahead runner at third.

But Francis Marion tagged Addison for four runs in the ninth with the help of back-to-back triples to take a 7-3 lead. Brian McFadden hit a leadoff double, Omar Quiles walked, and Weaver hit a two-run triple. Davis added an RBI triple, and Ogletree hit a sacrifice fly.

The Bearcats had taken a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Ryan Roeder hit a leadoff single, was sacrificed to second by Kevin Davis, stole third, and scored on Walter Cochrane's single. Adam Hutchins doubled, Cochrane scored when Jeremy Ryals reached on an error, and Hutchins scored when Jonathan Myers reached on a fielder's choice.

Francis Marion scored an unearned run in the fifth on Weaver's RBI ground out.

Radley Raven had an RBI single in the ninth for Lander's final run. The Bearcats did bring the tying run to the plate but failed to rally.

Mitch Norris (3-1) got the win in relief of Michael Williams and Brooks Sinquefield. Williams allowed three runs on six hits in 3.1 innings, while Sinquefield tossed 3.1 innings of shutout relief,  allowing one hit. Norris gave up one run on three hits in 2.1 innings.

Leading hitters for the Patriots in the opener were Weaver 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored; Davis 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored; Ogletree 2-for-4 with three RBIs; and McFadden 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Walton led the Bearcats with three hits in four at-bats while Myers, Raven and Cochrane had one RBI apiece.

Marks pitched 7.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits. He walked one and struck out three. Addison (1-5) allowed four runs on four hits, two walks and two strike outs in 1.2 innings.

In the nightcap, Francis Marion got another solid outing from sophomore left-hander Lee Tabor (8-3), who pitched a complete game seven-hitter.

Quiles led off game two with a walk, advanced to third on a double by Davis, and scored on Ogletree's ground out. The Patriots took a 2-0 lead in the third when Davis reached on an infield single, stole second and third, and scored on a throwing error by the Bearcat catcher.

Lander pulled to within 2-1 in the bottom of the third when Hutchins reached on an error and scored on a line drive double to left by Myers.

Francis Marion pushed the lead to 4-1 in the fourth on Michael Ward's RBI single and Nick Richardson's run-scoring double. The Patriots scored two more runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Quiles and RBI single by Davis, and scored twice in the sixth on RBIs by Nick Stewart and McFadden.

Roeder led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, stopped at third on Raven's single, and scored on Cochrane's ground out to make it 8-2.

Francis Marion added one run in the seventh.

The Bearcats had other scoring opportunities, but Kevin Davis lined into a double play to end the fourth and Francis Marion center fielder Quentin Davis made a nice catch of Walton's sinking liner with the bases loaded to end the fifth.

Leading the Patriots in game two were Davis 3-for-5 with two runs scored, one RBI, and three stolen bases; Stewart 2-for-2; Ward and Quiles 2-for-3; and Richardson, 2-for-5. Francis Marion drew 10 walks in the game.

Myers and Hutchins each went 2-for-3 for Lander in the second game.

Bearcats starter William Dudley lasted only 2.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. The left-hander walked four and struck out two. Evan Christian, Justin Altman and Tom Peterson relieved. Christian allowed six runs and Peterson one.
