FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University split a pair of matches on the opening day of the Joseph B. DuRant Memorial Invitational Tournament, Friday in the Smith University Center.
FMU opened its season beating North Carolina Central University 30-18, 30-26, 30-25, but dropped its second match in four games, 30-26, 30-10, 21-30, 30-14, to California University (Pa.).
In the opener, junior Lezlie Logan led the Patriots with 16 kills, while freshman Jessica Lombardi added 10 kills in her first collegiate match. Freshman setter Jenna Kaiser handed out 22 assists.
Against California (Pa.), Logan recorded 11 kills and Jessica Bartlett added 10 kills. Sophomore setter Brittany Helgeson came off the Patriot bench and dished out 21 assists. Junior libero Jessica Strader compiled 32 digs in the two matches, including 20 in the loss to the Vulcans.
Matches will continue on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing through 7 p.m. Francis Marion will play Barton College at 11 a.m. and Wingate University at 3 p.m.
