BANNER ELK, NC – Junior forward Shawn Picou scored in the 38th minute to lead the University of the Cumberlands to a 1-0 win over Francis Marion University, Saturday (Aug.27) on the final day of the Lees-McRae College Men's Soccer Classic.
FMU falls to 1-1, while the University of the Cumberlands improves to 2-0 in a battle where both teams were nicknamed the Patriots.
Picou scored the lone goal on an assist from sophomore Chris Waters. The winning Patriots outshot Francis Marion 25-7.
FMU senior goalkeeper Jonathan Runion kept his squad in the match with a career-high 13 saves.
Francis Marion will play its home opener on Wednesday when the Patriots host Belmont Abbey College at 4 p.m.
Dating back to last season, each of FMU's last five losses have been by one goal, including three 1-0 decisions.
