FLORENCE, SC – Aided by a long throw-in from senior Andy Conrad, sophomore Jonathan Bartomioli scored his second goal of the match three minutes into overtime as Francis Marion University claimed a 2-1 non-conference win over Belmont Abbey College, Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 31) in men's soccer action.

FMU, playing short-handed, improves to 2-1-0, while the hard-luck Crusaders drop to 0-2-1.  Patriot sophomore Shondell Busby received his second yellow card of the match with five minutes left in regulation, leaving Francis Marion a man down for the remainder of the match.  Belmont Abbey has yet to win this season, despite allowing only four goals in their three matches, all against Peach Belt Conference schools.

FMU will play at Queens University of Charlotte, Saturday at 4 p.m., while Belmont Abbey plays at fourth-ranked UNC Pembroke, Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead at the 14-minute mark when sophomore Luis Arrieta scored on a 5-yard shot.  His goal followed a pass by Nick Wyatt and a cross by Paul Goding.

FMU knotted the scored 1-1 at 38:36 when Bartomioli scored on a loose ball near the Crusader goal.

The winning score came with FMU owning a throw-in near midfield.  Conrad threw the ball over the back line of defenders, Bartomioli beat several Crusaders to the ball, and then following one move to elude Belmont Abbey goalkeeper Sean O'Connor, he scored into the open net.

Patriot senior goalkeeper Jonathan Runion recorded four saves, while O'Connor finished with six stops.  Francis Marion outshot Belmont Abbey 12-7 and led 7-5 in corner kicks.
