NASHVILLE, TN - Kelci Hegg scored three goals and assisted on a fourth to lead Vanderbilt University to a 9-0 in over Francis Marion University, Friday night in women's soccer action, spoiling the Patriots' NCAA Division I debut.
The Commodores (2-1-0) outshot the Patriots (0-1-0) 43-3 and clearly had a dominant advantage in time of possession. "It was a great testament to Francis Marion's character, the way they hung in there and continued to fight," said Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Coveleskie Hill. "I think they're going to have a really bright future in front of them."
Despite being peppered with shots, FMU sophomore goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin recorded 13 saves in her first start for the Patriots.
Hegg scored the first goal after a corner kick from Monica Buff, the eighth goal on another Buff assist, and then the final tally.
Amy Baumann also sent two balls in the back of the net and contributed two assists for six points, while Kari Boersma, Jessica Lenze, Amy Wilcox, and Sarah Dennis all scored one goal each. Dennis, Wilcox, and sophomore Meredith Kohn all contributed one assist each.
FMU returns to action on Sunday when the Patriots play a 3:30 p.m. road match at Lenoir-Rhyne College. The Commodores will play host to Washington State University, Sunday at 1 p.m.
