Patriot Men Fall to Queens 4-1

CHARLOTTE, NC — Led by the senior duo of Demetrius Donald and Eric Blevens, 22nd-ranked Queens University of Charlotte defeated Francis Marion University 4-1 in non-conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon.

The Patriots (2-2-0) got the upper-hand in the early going, as FMU grabbed a 1-0 advantage at the 7:58 mark.  Queens goalkeeper Bruce Mottern, a 2004 All-American, was caught off guard by Matt Harris' goal that put Francis Marion ahead. After recovering a loose ball from the left corner kick area, Harris casually retreated towards the opposite goal. After dribbling back down field a few yards and seemingly convincing everyone that he was trying to reset the Patriot attack, Harris then skillfully flicked an amazing shot to the upper 90 that just slipped past Mottern's gloves.

The first half ended 1-1.  As the second half got underway, the Royals did not spare a minute before scoring goal number two. Senior John Ross placed a low bullet in the left corner from about 15 yards out off of a Blevens' feed to put the Royals up 2-1.

The Royals would go up 3-1 about ten minutes later. Blevens served senior John Ross a long floating ball to the far right outside the 18-yard line. Ross in turn, served Blevens a floater to the left corner post. Skillfully controlling the ball out of the air, Blevens caught a Patriot defender going the wrong way to position himself for his second goal of the day.

Freshman David Palmer would score the final tally with 22:01 left in the game. Junior Matt Herbstritt served the wide open Palmer, who was situated in a very dangerous position inside the penalty box. The freshman finished the play with a nice low left kick to the right corner, making the score 4-1.

FMU will play at Barton College, Wednesday at 4 p.m.
