Columbia, SC - The Francis Marion University men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2005 seasons Friday evening (Sept. 2) at the Gamecock Invitational Meet, finishing third and second respectively in their 5,000-meters races.
UNC Pembroke won the women's Division II competition with 23 points, followed by FMU with 39 and Coker College with 58. Freshman Kelly May paced the Patriot runners with a second-place finish in 20:17, while sophomore Codi Knoch was third in 21:18. Other Patriot finishers were Megan Coy in eighth, Laura Vona in 11th, and Sara Parry in 16th.
UNCP also won the men's Division II event with 28 points, followed by Coker (30), and Francis Marion (68). Newcomer Patrick Hopewell led the FMU finishers with a ninth-place showing in a time of 17:25. Patriot sophomore Ariel Ortiz was 11th in 18:03, while Steven Holmes was 14th, Dan Brann was 16th, and Josh Sears was 18th.
Both FMU squads will compete in the UNCP Invitational Meet, Sept. 10 in Lumberton, N.C.
