FLORENCE, SC – Three freshmen scored goals, while sophomore Jonathan Bartomioli tallied his team-leading fifth score of the year to lead Francis Marion University to a 4-1 non-conference men's soccer victory over Brevard College, Saturday afternoon (Sept. 10).
FMU improves to 4-2-0, while Brevard, an NAIA school, falls to 1-2-2.
FMU employed a starting line-up that included five freshmen and four sophomores. The Patriots took a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Willie Hunt at 16:10. The margin grew to 2-0 in the 30th minute when Matt Harris scored on a Bartomioli assist.
Brevard trimmed the lead to 2-1 at 69:00, when freshman Anderas Klang scored on a 15-yard shot.
Bartomioli returned the margin to two goals, when he scored on a 12-yard shot at 79:43. Biagio Galle and freshman David Lyman both recorded assists on the score. Lyman finished the scoring at 84:51 when he took a pass from Bartomioli and found the back of the net from 16 yards out.
Both teams managed seven shots in the opening 45 minutes, but Francis Marion outshot the Tornados 19-5 in the second stanza. The Patriots also held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
FMU senior goalkeeper Jonathan Runion tallied five saves, while Brevard's Joshua Carter, a last-minute substitute for starter Matt Quellette, compiled eight saves.
FMU plays host to Wingate University, Wednesday at 4 p.m., while Brevard plays at Milligan College, Wednesday at 7 p.m.
