NEWBERRY, S.C. – Senior Kelly Feber and junior Lezlie Logan combined for 41 kills to lead Francis Marion University to a 30-23, 30-17, 26-30, 30-21 non-conference win over Newberry College, Tuesday evening (Sept. 13) in volleyball action.
FMU improved to 10-4, while spoiling the Indians' home opener. Feber tallied 21 kills and 17 digs to lead Francis Marion, while Logan posted 20 kills and Jessica Bartlett had 11 kills. Libero Jessica Strader dug out 24 balls and sophomore setter Brittany Hennessy handed out 49 assists in three games.
Jamie Foster-Mann had four service aces and Cara Coleman had 13 kills and Jessica Lipsi nine kills to lead Newberry (4-6).
Coleman and Laurie Barman led Newberry with three kills apiece in game one, but Feber led the Patriots with an impressive eight kills in the game. Francis Marion hit a powerful .361 while Newberry hit .105. The Indians were outdug 17-10, but posted four total team blocks to the Patriots' one.
Logan led FMU with five kills in game two, while Newberry hit .000 in the game (8 kills, 8 errors, 46 attempts). Foster-Mann, Barman and Coleman each paced Newberry with two kills, but Newberry's blocking game was unproductive as the Indians were outblocked 3-0.
Newberry turned it around in game three, hitting an impressive .302 to the Patriots' .244 as Coleman and Katie Stone led the way with five kills apiece. Foster-Mann recorded three of her four service aces in the game, all of which were consecutive, giving Newberry an early 8-7 lead. The game was back and forth with six ties and five lead changes, but the Indians prevailed 30-26 to force a fourth game.
Francis Marion came alive in game four, hitting .310 to Newberry’s .139. Lipsi led Newberry with five kills in the game, while FMU's Logan had six kills and Feber notched five as Francis Marion took the 30-21 game victory which sealed the Patriot win.
FMU will face the State University of West Georgia, Saturday at 11 a.m. as part of the AASU Volleyball Clash in Savannah, Ga. Newberry enters back into South Atlantic Conference play this weekend traveling to Jefferson City, Tenn., Friday night to take on Carson-Newman at 7 p.m.
