FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore Biagio Galle scored a pair of goals, including the 1000th goal in the history of the Francis Marion University men's soccer program, to lead the Patriots to a 3-0 win over Wingate University, Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 14) in non-conference men's soccer action.
Francis Marion ups its record to 5-2-0 with its third straight win, while Wingate falls to 3-4-0. FMU has now beaten the Bulldogs 12 times in 15 all-time meetings.
Galle's first goal came at the 20:58 mark following a pass ahead from Valentine Baker and a quick touch pass from Shondell Busby. The 15-yard shot became the 1000th goal in the 31-year history of the Patriot program. Mike Ragan scored the first Francis Marion goal off an assist from Jimmy Brown in a 5-1 loss at UNC-Asheville on Sept. 12, 1975. FMU upped its lead to 2-0 in the 69th minute when senior defender Mike Greenaway cleared the ball from the Patriots' own box, and the wind-aided pass found freshman David Lyman at the other end for a 12-yard shot.
Balle scored the final Patriot tally on a penalty kick at 73:55, following an intentional handball call in the box against Wingate's Lee Minton. The two goals were the first of Galle's collegiate career.
Wingate outshot the Patriots 11-8, but senior FMU goalkeeper Jonathan Runion recorded six saves en route to his second shutout of the year and 11th of his career. He has allowed only one score in his last 292 minutes in goal. With his next appearance, Runion will tie the Francis Marion career record for matches played in goal (60), currently held by Kris Laskowski (1994-97).
Wingate's best scoring opportunity came in the 36th minute when a shot by James Lavery got behind Runion, but the keeper was able to corral the ball before it crossed the goal line.
Wingate goalkeeper Dustin Prickett did not record a save as FMU's only three shots on goal went in. FMU held a slight advantage in corner kicks 4-2.
FMU plays at St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Wednesday at 4 p.m. Wingate's next match will be Friday evening at 7 p.m. at the University of Charleston (WV).
