USCA Sets Tournament Record at FMU Event; Host Patriots Place Second

FLORENCE, SC – Freshman Matt Giftos fired a final-round 70 to lead USC Aiken to a record-setting win at the 21st-annual Raines Development Group Intercollegiate Tournament, Tuesday (Sept. 20) at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C.

Francis Marion University, playing in its first event as a provisional NCAA Division I member, placed second, nine strokes behind the Pacers.  The 54-hole event was played on the par 72, 7,062-yard CCSC course.

USCA fired a final-round, three-over-par 291 team score to finish the tournament at 15-under-par 849, smashing the tournament record score of 4-under-par 860, established by Jacksonville State University in 1998.  The host Patriots also bettered the old mark with their 6-under 858 tally.

Elon University placed third at 863, followed by the University of South Carolina (864), Old Dominion University (873), Davidson College and Charleston Southern University (874), Kennesaw State University (878), Jacksonville University (882), Western Carolina University (884), Liberty University (891), Georgia College & State University (898), College of William & Mary (906), and Gardner-Webb University (914).

ODU posted the low team round on Tuesday with an even-par 288.

Jamie Kennedy of Jacksonville and Matt Cook of Western Carolina tied for first place in the individual standings (209) with final-round scores of 69 and 70 respectively.  Cook garnered medalist honors by virtue of tournament tiebreaker rules.

USCA senior Scott Brown, the individual leader after 36 holes, carded a final-round 73 to tie Giftos and FMU senior Luke Hart for third place at 6-under-par 210.  Kennedy and Hart were among four golfers to shoot the lowest round (69) on Tuesday.

USCA, the two-time defending NCAA Division II national champion, wins its seventh straight tournament dating back to last season.

FMU's Louis-Pierre Godin, who was competing as an individual, placed sixth at 5-under 211, following a final-round 71 score.

Only nine shots separated four members of the counting Patriot squad: Luke Hart (210), Adam Hart (tied for 7th at 213), Colin Floyd (tied for 21st at 217), Jacob Tveit (29th at 219), and Aengus McAllister (tied for 55th at 229).

Cook and Kennedy finished two shots shy of the 54-hole individual record of 9-under-par 207 set by Ryan Glidersleeve of the University of South Alabama in 2002.

FMU will compete in the Sonic / UTC Fall Golf Classic, hosted by the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga in Signal Mountain, Tenn., Oct. 17-18.
