Momoh lifts Knights soccer past Francis Marion

LAURINBURG, NC—Sophomore forward Jerry Momoh scored a spectacular goal in the 30th minute that catapulted St. Andrews Presbyterian College to a 2-0 non-conference men's soccer win over Francis Marion University, Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 21).

The Knights (3-4) snapped a two-game losing streak, while the Patriots (5-3) saw their three-game winning streak end.

At the 29:58 mark, senior Krisztian Mikoczi placed a leading pass that gave Momoh a breakaway. FMU goalkeeper Jonathan Runion came out and took away most of the angle, but Momoh ripped a low shot out of Runion's diving reach and just inside the far, left post. The eventual game-winner was Momoh's second tally of the season.

The score was only the second against Runion in his last 328 minutes in goal.  The Findlay, Ohio, native tied the FMU record for matches played in goal (60) with his start on Wednesday.  Runion tallied two saves as St. Andrews outshot the Patriots 10-8.

Mikoczi added a late insurance goal for the Knights in the 85th minute, finishing off a beautiful crossing pass by freshman Justin Garton.  Mikoczi increased his team-high totals to three goals, five assists, and 11 points.

Freshman goalie Nick Stevens picked up his first collegiate win and shutout for the Knights, making both of his saves late.  Patriots Mike Greenaway and Willie Hunt each rifled shots that Stevens had to make acrobatic saves on. Stevens was also instrumental in breaking up 11 Francis Marion corner kicks.

FMU opens Peach Belt Conference play at 20th-ranked USC Upstate, Saturday night at 7 p.m.  The Knights visit Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference rival Pfeiffer University on Saturday at 4 p.m.
