Spartanburg, SC - Liam Slack became the 13th player in the history of the USC Upstate men's soccer program to reach 100 career points and his two goals helped the 20th-ranked Spartans to a 3-0 victory over Francis Marion Saturday night at County University Soccer Stadium.
USC Upstate improves to 6-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Peach Belt Conference. Francis Marion falls to 5-4-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the league. USC Upstate next plays at Belmont Abbey Wednesday afternoon at 4:00, while Francis Marion travels to Coker Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. start.
Slack's first goal and 98th point of his career came in large part by a terrific play by Kim Krohn. Krohn took possession on the left center of the field 30 yards out and slid a pass to Slack on the left side of the box. Slack broke on the pass and was one-on-one with the keeper, sliding a shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 USC Upstate lead in the 15th minute.
After halftime, Slack streaked down the field after a through ball had been played from the midfield and was taken out by Francis Marion goalkeeper Jonathan Runion in the box. Slack converted the ensuing penalty kick in the 51st minute to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead and himself 100 career points.
Jorge Atehortua, himself attempting to join the 100-point club, added a penalty kick goal in the 84th minute to round out the scoring. Atehortua is now at 98 points for his career.
Slack becomes the 13th Spartan to reach 100 career points in the storied history of the program. Henrik Ronnevig is USC Upstate's all-time leading scorer with 177 points. Slack and Atehortua are both juniors.
FMU's Runion set a new school record for matches played in goal with his 61st appearance.
