CSU Drops Francis Marion in Volleyball, 3-1

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern University snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory (30-25, 28-30, 31-29, 30-18) over visiting Francis Marion University in volleyball action at the CSU Field house on Monday night. CSU improves to 5-8 on the season, while FMU drops to 12-7.

CSU senior setter Katie O'Riordan displayed a total game with a team-leading 16 kills and 43 assists to pace the Lady Bucs, who improved to 3-1 at home this season.  O'Riordan added three solo blocks and two block assists to lead the way.

Senior Tori Owens added 13 kills and 14 digs, while junior Jill Worby recorded 11 kills and 14 digs.  Sophomore middle Canan Erdogan had her best match of the season with nine kills and only one attack error.  Senior Erin Wicker and sophomore Renae Popovich each posted nine kills.

Charleston Southern had their best match of the season in terms of effectiveness at the net, posting a kill percentage of .314 for the match.  The Lady Bucs committed only 18 attack errors in the four games.

Senior Jessica Bartlett, who last Friday surpassed 1,000 career kills, posted 15 kills to pace FMU, which also got 13 kills each from Lezlie Logan and Michelle Settergren.  Freshman setter Jenna Kaiser had 39 assists and Jackie Phiel recorded 18 digs.

CSU took early control of the first game, breaking out to an early 15-5 lead and cruising to victory.  The Lady Bucs posted a .412 kill percentage in the game with only four errors.

FMU rallied behind the play of Bartlett and Logan in game two and came away with a 30-28 win as CSU cooled to .100 in kill percentage with eight attack errors.

Game three appeared headed the way of the visitors as FMU dominated play throughout in building a 28-22 advantage.  CSU, however, rallied for six consecutive points with Owens on serve, tying the score at 28. With the game tied at 29, CSU posted back-to-back points for the 31-29 victory.

Sensing victory, Charleston Southern opened up a quick five-point advantage in game four before taking an 18-12 lead.  FMU got no closer than six points down the stretch as CSU rolled to the 30-18 win.

FMU plays host to Peach Belt Conference rival UNC Pembroke, Wednesday at 7 p.m.  Charleston Southern returns to action this Friday at Big South Conference foe UNC Asheville.
