FLORENCE, SC – Senior Katie Riley scored a pair of goals to lead Francis Marion University to a 3-2 win over Presbyterian College, Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 28) in women's college soccer action.
The Patriots up their season record to 2-4-0 and are 10-0-1 all-time in home openers. Presbyterian drops to 3-5-0.
Riley tallied her first goal only 1:02 into the match when she received a pass from Mollie Jones and scored on a 10-yard shot. It was the second-fast goal in team history, only four seconds shy of the record set in 2002, on which Riley had the assist.
Riley doubled the Patriot margin to 2-0 in the 24th minute when she connected on a 5-yard shot from a near-impossible angle on the left side of the goal. She moved into second place on the Patriot career scoring list with 40 goals, passing Kerri Williams.
Presbyterian trimmed the lead to 2-1 at 29:57 when Claire Joyce scored off a feed from Ginny Wolfe. It was Joyce’s team-leading fourth goal of the year.
FMU regained its two-goal advantage (3-1) when freshman Ashley Wahl scored her second goal of the year at 43:21. Alese Tremmel assisted on each of FMU’s last two goals.
The Blue Hose again cut the deficit to one goal at 3-2 when Megan Smith headed in a free kick by Kaitlin McShea with only 30 seconds remaining the in the opening half.
Neither team scored in the second half.
Presbyterian outshot Francis Marion 14-11, but the Patriots held a slight 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
FMU sophomore goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin recorded four saves, while Presbyterian keeper Brittany Pecora had three stops.
FMU will play host to Lander University, Saturday at 1 p.m. Presbyterian returns to action on Oct. 7 with a 4 p.m. match at Wingate University.
