Riley's Two Goals Lead FMU Past Lander 4-0

FLORENCE, SC – Senior Katie Riley scored a pair of goals, senior Mollie Jones recorded three assists and a goal, and sophomore goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin registered her second career shutout to lift Francis Marion University to a 4-0 win over Lander University, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 1) in women's college soccer action.

Francis Marion, in its first year as a provisional NCAA Division I member, improves to 3-4-0 with its second straight win.  Lander sees its two-match winning streak snapped and falls to 3-7-0. The Patriots have never lost to the Bearcats in eight all-time meetings and have now outscored Lander 37-1 in those matches.

Freshman Ashley Wahl gave FMU a 1-0 advantage when she scored on a 10-yard shot at the 9:56 mark of the opening half.  Jones and Riley were both credited with assists on the score as the ball was played ahead and then crossed to the middle of the field where Wahl took control of it.

Riley doubled the lead to 2-0 at 15:00 when she took a feed from Jones and beat Lander freshman goalkeeper Rachael Hine with a 15-yard shot.  Jones upped the margin to 3-0 in the 32nd minute, taking a pass from Liz Gallacher and finding the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

Riley tallied the only goal of the second stanza, utilizing a pass from Jones and scoring from 15 yards out at 60:17.  Riley, who also scored twice in Wednesday's victory over Presbyterian College, now has four goals this season and 42 for her career, second on the all-time Patriot list. Her fives points on Saturday moved her past Kerri Williams and into second place on the FMU career points list with 103.

Lander outshot FMU 15-9, but Sutphin stopped the only Bearcat shot on goal.  Both teams attempted four corner kicks.  Hine finished with three saves.

Lander's best scoring opportunities came early in the match.  Jannica Finnberg's blast caromed off the cross bar in the eighth minute, and Sutphin's save came on a shot by Sarah Burdette in the ninth minute.

FMU will play at Longwood University in Farmville, Va., Saturday at 3 p.m., while Lander plays host to North Greenville College, Wednesday at 4 p.m.
