Francis Marion Sweeps Bearcats in Volleyball

FLORENCE, SC – Less than 24 hours after claiming a dramatic come-from-behind five-game conference win, the Francis Marion University volleyball team had an easier time on Saturday afternoon, sweeping to a 30-19, 30-14, 30-22 victory over visiting Lander University.

FMU ups its overall mark to 15-7 and is now 3-1 in the Peach Belt Conference.  Lander (6-12, 0-5) has now lost six straight matches.  The Patriots took nearly two-and-a-half hours to claim a 21-30, 23-30, 30-27, 30-27, 21-19 PBC win over USC Upstate on Friday night, but quickly disposed of the Bearcats on Saturday.

Senior Jessica Bartlett's 14 kills led three Patriots with double-figure kills. Junior Lezlie Logan and sophomore Michelle Settergren each compiled 11 kills.  Sophomore Jackie Phiel and junior libero Jessica Strader posted 16 and 15 digs respectively, while setters Jenna Kaiser and Brittany Helgeson handed out 22 and 17 assists respectively.  FMU freshman Amy Witko added 10 digs and three service aces.

Freshman Kerri Sorensen paced Lander with seven kills, but as a team Lander hit only 0.009 for the match.  Freshman setter Carly Plecha dished out 19 assists and had 12 digs, while libero Melissa Trippany dug out 14 balls.

FMU will play host to PBC foe USC Aiken, Tuesday at 7 p.m., while Lander plays at Newberry College, also Tuesday at 7 p.m.
