Patriots Blank #22 Mount Olive 2-0
FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore Jonathan Bartomioli and freshman David Simpson scored goals and senior goalkeeper Jonathan Runion made five saves to give Francis Marion University a wet 2-0 upset win over 22nd-ranked Mount Olive College, Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 5) in non-conference men's soccer action.

FMU ups its record to 7-5 and snaps a four-game losing skid to nationally ranked opponents.  Mount Olive, which last week was ranked seventh in NCAA Division II, suffers its third straight shutout and drops to 8-3-1.

Bartomioli scored his team-leading sixth goal on a tremendous 22-yard blast only 11:09 into the match.  The goal was assisted by Biagio Galle, who picked off an errand Mount Olive pass to start the scoring sequence.

Simpson scored his first career goal at 48:42 when he took a free kick from Matt Harris and knocked the ball into the goal.

Mount Olive outshot Francis Marion 10-6, but very few of the Trojan attempts were serious scoring threats.  Perhaps Mount Olive's best opportunity came in the fifth minute when leading scorer Reid Clewis pounded the ball off the crossbar from the close left wing.  Mount Olive also held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Runion registered his 12th career shutout and equaled the Patriot career record for starts in goal with his 58th start.  Mount Olive goalkeeper Chris Roush did not record a save as FMU scored on both its two shots-on-goal.

FMU will travel to Dahlonega, Ga., on Saturday for its first-ever meeting with Peach Belt Conference newcomer North Georgia College & State University.  The match will kick off at 4 p.m.  Mount Olive College will play at Queens University of Charlotte, Saturday at 4 p.m.
