FLORENCE, SC – Senior Kelly Feber recorded a pair of double-doubles and reached a career milestone as Francis Marion University swept volleyball matches from Peach Belt Conference foe Augusta State University and non-conference opponent St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 8).
In the opener, FMU downed Augusta State 30-18, 30-18, 32-30, and later in the afternoon the Patriots beat St. Andrews 30-19, 30-22, 30-21.
FMU moves to 17-8 overall and 4-2 in the PBC, while ASU falls to 4-19 and 1-5, and St. Andrews (1-14) drops its 10th consecutive match.
In the first match, Feber compiled 11 kills and 11 digs and in the process became the third member of this year's squad to surpass 1,000 career kills. She ended the day with 1,019 career kills. Senior Jessica Bartlett also had 11 kills, while freshman setter Jenna Kaiser registered 36 assists and 12 digs. As a team, FMU totaled nine service aces and held ASU to an .096 attack percentage.
For ASU, junior Brooke Elder came off the Jaguar bench to tally 15 kills and six digs, while Sarah Lobstein had 11 kills and 15 digs. Setter Jessica Lowes handed out 31 assists, while libero Meredith LeGrand dug out 16 balls.
Against St. Andrews, Feber recorded 10 kills and 17 digs. Freshman Jessica Lombardi had a team-high 11 kills and three service aces, setter Brittany Helgeson compiled 35 assists and four aces, and libero Jessica Strader had a season-high 26 digs. Again, the Francis Marion defense held its opponents to a low hitting percentage, .058 for the Knights.
Junior Jessica Bewley led the Knights with 16 kills and 13 digs, while sophomore libero Erin Haugen had a match-high 35 digs. Setter Kim Harper dished out 24 assists and dug out 16 balls.
FMU will participate in the South Region Tournament on Oct. 14-15 in Winter Park, Fla. The Patriots will open with Carson-Newman College, Friday at 10 a.m. ASU entertains Newberry College on Oct. 19 at 7 p.m., while St. Andrews plays host to Limestone College and Eckerd College, Sunday (Oct. 9) at 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. respectively.
