FLORENCE, S.C. – Junior Rowena Alsanea scored a pair of second-half goals to pace the NAIA’s third-ranked team, Lindsey Wilson College, to a 3-0 win over Francis Marion University, Thursday afternoon (Oct. 13) in women's college soccer action.
Lindsey Wilson, the defending NAIA national champions, ups its record to 10-2-1. Francis Marion, in its first year as a provisional NCAA Division I member, drops to 3-6-0. The loss is worst home shutout defeat in the program's 11 seasons and only the 15th loss in 93 all-time home matches.
For the second straight match, FMU battled its opponent to a scoreless halftime deadlock. The Patriots’ best scoring opportunity came at 33:12 when Alese Tremmel headed a cross from Katie Riley toward the Lindsey Wilson goal. Freshman goalkeeper Mia Moller got a hand on the shot and the ball glanced off the crossbar resulting in a Francis Marion corner kick.
The Blue Raiders' first goal came at 60:36 when Alsanea headed in a pass from Jill Lirbank-Almbaek. The play was set up by a free kick following an FMU foul near midfield.
Alsanea doubled the lead to 2-0 in the 77th minute when she scored on a long 20-yard shot from the right side. She now has five goals for the season. Freshman Jodi Ann McGregor scored the final goal on a 7-yard shot with only 20 second remaining. Hishamar Falconer assisted on the last tally.
Despite being outshot 13-5, Francis Marion held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Moller compiled two saves en route to her fourth shutout of the year. FMU sophomore goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin had six saves.
FMU will play host to Wingate University, Saturday at 4 p.m. on YMCA Youth Soccer Day.
