FLORENCE, S.C. – Senior Mollie Jones scored with nine seconds remaining in the second overtime period to give Francis Marion University a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Wingate University, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 15) in women's college soccer action.
Francis Marion ups its record to 4-6-0 and avoids its first-ever three-match home winless streak. FMU, which stands 77-15-2 all-time at home, had lost its last two home contests.
The Patriots are in their first year as a provisional NCAA Division I member.
The winning score was set by a cross by Morgan Harwood from the right corner. As the final seconds were being counted off, Jones received the ball in the box and connected on a seven-yard shot. It is the second goal of the season for Jones.
Freshman forward Caroline Harvischak gave Wingate (10-5-0) a 1-0 lead four minutes before halftime with her team-leading eighth goal of the year. Kelly Munchel assisted on the score. Francis Marion was held scoreless in the opening 45 minutes for the third consecutive match, and managed only two shots before halftime.
At the 65:36 mark, Patriot senior Katie Riley knotted the score at 1-1 with her sixth tally of the season. Senior Liz Gallacher played the ball ahead to Riley who controlled the ball, made a move to avoid hard-charging Wingate goalkeeper Kathryn Smith, and then fired a 10-yard shot in the open goal. Riley's goal was the 44th of her career, only three shy of the Patriot record. She is also second on the FMU career points list with 107.
Francis Marion nearly won the match in regulation, but Riley's goal with 3:49 remaining was waved off because of an offside call against the Patriots.
The evenly played match saw each team record 12 shots, four corner kicks, and 16 fouls.
Smith posted three saves, while FMU sophomore goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin compiled six stops.
FMU will play host to UNC Asheville, Tuesday at 4 p.m., while Wingate entertains Presbyterian College, Monday at 4 p.m.
