FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Methodist College used a first-half goal by Gregg Cohen to claim a thrilling 1-0 win over Francis Marion University, Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 18) in men's soccer action at the Monarch SoccerPlex.
Methodist has won two straight, and three of its last four, to improve to 5-7-1 overall, while Francis Marion has lost three consecutive matches to fall below .500 at 7-8-0. Each of the three losses have been by one goal.
The match's lone score occurred right before the end of the first half in the 41st minute. Cohen scored off a cross pass from Steven Brumbaugh
In the second half, the Monarch defense stymied the Patriots behind the stellar play of defenders Jimmy Izaguirre, Richard Distad, Desmond Keane and Chris MacDonald. Methodist goalkeeper Jeremy Belnap recorded the shutout with six saves.
FMU senior goalkeeper Jonathan Runion recorded one save. FMU outshot Methodist 11-10 and led 7-4 in corner kicks.
Francis Marion will play host to 16th-ranked Clayton State University, Sunday at 4 p.m.
