UNCP and Sallin Blank Patriots 2-0

FLORENCE, N.C. – Sophomores Tuncay Dilek and Bjorn Beck each scored one goal and sophomore goalkeeper Richard Sallin made one save to lift UNC Pembroke to 2-0 Peach Belt Conference win over Francis Marion University, Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 26) in men's soccer action.

UNCP, the defending PBC champions, move to 11-3-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the Peach Belt.  FMU (7-10-0, 0-6-0) loses its fifth straight match and finishes conference play winless for the first time since 1994.

Dilek opened the scoring when he connected on a 10-yard shot at the 29:51 mark of the opening stanza.  Jose Sanchez and Miguel Ferrer assisted on the goal.  Dilek is second in the PBC with 12 goals.

FMU nearly tied the match in the 42nd minute, but a blast by freshman Matt Harris bounced off the left goalpost.  Dilek almost had a second goal in a one-against-one situation against FMU senior goalkeeper Jonathan Runion, but Runion stopped his shot in the 69th minute.

Beck completed the scoring at 78:29 when he received a pass from Ferrer and scored on a 13-yard shot.

UNCP outshot Francis Marion 17-5, including 12-2 in the first 45 minutes.  Both teams took five corner kicks.  Sallin stopped the only shot-on-goal he faced, an attempt by Harris in the 37th minute, en route to his seventh shutout of the year.

Runion recorded seven saves and in the process set a new Patriot career mark for saves with 353.  He moved past former recorder holder Rick Clark, who made 347 stops between 1990 and 1993.

Francis Marion will celebrate Senior Day when the Patriots play host to Catawba College, Saturday at 2 p.m.  UNCP plays at USC Aiken, Saturday at 7 p.m.
