FLORENCE, S.C. – Freshman Matt Harris assisted on a first-half goal and then scored the match-winner with 19:25 remaining to lift Francis Marion University to a 2-1 upset of 15th-ranked Catawba College, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 29) in non-conference men's soccer action.
Francis Marion snaps a five-match losing skid and ends its regular season 8-10-0, while Catawba falls to 12-4-1. It is the second home win for FMU over a nationally ranked opponent this season.
Senior back Mike Greenaway put the Patriots ahead 1-0 at the 10:47 mark when he headed in a cross from Harris. It was Greenaway's third goal of the season and seventh of his career. He along with five other seniors were honored in pregame festivities.
Catawba senior Zay-Zay Gilewala knotted the score at 1-1 with a score in the 16th minute. The Indian's Ryan Villiard played the ball ahead on the right side to Jason Dumond who made a cross to Gilewala in the box for the goal. It was Gilewala's sixth tally of the year.
Harris scored the winning goal on a 10-yard shot at the 70:35 mark. The Patriots were awarded a throw-in and senior Anthony Addorisio found Shondell Busby who crossed the ball to Harris for his fourth goal of the season.
The wild second half featured 24 combined shots. Francis Marion had chances to build on its lead, while Catawba had opportunities to tie the match. In the 78th minute, Villiard rocketed a blast from close range that caught FMU senior goalkeeper Jonathan Runion in the head, but the ball bounced away and was cleared. The Indians did score at 87:10, but the tying goal was waved off because of an offside call.
FMU senior Valentine Baker had two shots in an 18-second span of the 79th minute, but his first attempt bounced off the goalpost and his second was stopped by Indians' goalkeeper Dan Fitzgerald.
Catawba outshot the Patriots 21-17, and held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Runion, who last match set a new Patriot career mark for saves, finished Saturday with 11 stops, the second-highest single-match total of his career. He now has 364 career saves.
Fitzgerald finished with four saves.
Francis Marion will take to the road for a first-round Peach Belt Conference Tournament match, Wednesday at an opponent yet to be determined. Catawba plays in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament beginning Tuesday.
