Gallacher's Goal Gives Patriots 2-1 OT Win

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – Senior Liz Gallacher scored with only 1:13 remaining in the first overtime period to give Francis Marion University a 2-1 victory over the University of North Florida, Monday afternoon (Oct. 31) in women's college soccer action.

Francis Marion ups its record to 5-7-1 and picks up its first win against an NCAA Division I opponent, in this its first year as a provisional Division I member.  All four of the Patriots' previous victories this season had come against Division II foes.

UNF, a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, ends its season 8-8-2.

The opening 45 minutes featured only seven combined shots, three by FMU.  Senior midfielder Mollie Jones gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead when she scored off a rebound only 22 seconds before halftime.  UNF goalkeeper Rachael Howard prevented a Kiersten Nedervelt shot from reaching the net, but was unable to clear the ball, giving Jones a clear view of the net, which she turned into her third score of the 2005 season.

North Florida managed to knot the match at a goal apiece in the 76th minute when midfielder Courtney Forson headed a Nicole Handy pass just beyond the reach of FMU goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin.

With neither team able to score in the final 14:47 of regulation, the teams headed to the extra period.   Gallacher provided the match-winning score when she redirected a Katie Riley pass past a diving Howard.

UNF outshot Francis Marion 10-8 and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Both squads tallied four shots on goal.

Sutphin recorded three saves to earn the win, while Howard tallied two saves.

FMU will conclude its season by playing in the Independent Cup, this weekend in Kennesaw, Ga.  The Patriots will face the University of Northern Colorado, Saturday at 2 p.m. and the host school, Kennesaw State University, Sunday at 4 p.m.
