KENNESAW, GA. – Junior midfielder Chelsey Ekenberg scored the match-winning goal with 9:09 remaining to lift the University of Northern Colorado to a 2-1 win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Nov. 5) in the women's soccer Independent Cup.

Francis Marion drops to 5-8-1 in its first year as a provisional NCAA Division I member, while Northern Colorado ends its season at 7-9-2.

FMU will face Kennesaw State University, Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Patriots' season finale.

Neither team scored in the opening half.  The Patriots grabbed a 1-0 lead when freshman forward Jayme Friess tallied her first career goal at the 65:58 mark.  Friess corralled a loose ball in the box and scored following a corner kick by freshman Brandi Bonifay.

Northern Colorado knotted the score at 1-1 in the 77th minute when Jessica Zimmerman scored on an unobstructed 20-yard blast that hooked past FMU sophomore goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin.  Teresa Prais assisted on the goal.

The Bears took the lead on Ekenberg's goal at 80:51, thanks to assists from Laura Hassebroek and Marika Johnson.

Northern Colorado outshot FMU 21-10 and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Sutphin ended the match with five saves, while Bears' goalkeeper Chrissy Marvin registered four stops.
