FMU Hoop Teams Pick Up Two Wins at Zaxby's Patriot Clazzic
FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University men's and women's basketball teams both improved to 2-1 on the young season with victories on Saturday evening (Nov. 19), the final day of the Zaxby's Patriot Clazzic in Florence.
Senior Danielle Moore tallied 19 points for the second straight night and the Patriot women held off a late Fayetteville State University rally to claim a 73-72 win.
The score was tied at halftime, 33-33, but Francis Marion opened up a 60-49 lead following two Courtenay Etheredge free throws with 9:23 remaining. Fayetteville State (0-2) twice trimmed the margin to two points, the last time at 71-69 on a layup by Danyelle Carter with 2:38 left. Moore scored on a fast-break layup with 38 ticks remaining to put FMU up 73-69, but FSU’s Tiffany Mitchell drained a long three-pointer with four ticks on the clock to cut the deficit to 73-72. A wild scramble ensued on the following in-bounds pass, but Fayetteville State was unable to gain possession of the ball before the horn sounded.
Following Moore, sophomore guard Renee Guilliams tallied a career-high 12 points, all of which came after intermission. Sophomore forward Creshenda Singletary added 10 points and eight rebounds. Moore also hauled down 10 rebounds and handed out five assists. FMU won despite committing 35 turnovers, the most for the Patriots in three seasons.
Mitchell led the Lady Broncos with 18 points, while Shayla Roberts added 12 and Carter 11.
The Francis Marion men pulled away in the second half behind the play of seniors George Walker and Michael Jenkins to take a 68-56 win over Anderson College. Walker equaled his career-high of 19 points set on Friday night. He drained 12 of 14 free throws. Jenkins added 13 points, while center Raymond Dorsey scored 12 points, grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, and blocked three shots. Senior Vony Rivers chipped in 10 points off the Patriot bench.
Reserve forward Tariq Naqquash led Anderson (1-1) with 16 points and five rebounds, while center Randy Javois added 12 points and nine rebounds.
Francis Marion led 31-25 at intermission. The lead would grow to 11 points early in the second stanza. The Trojans cut the margin to one point at 50-49, and later at 55-54 after a John LeSueur three-pointer with 4:18 remaining. The Patriots then scored the next nine points, sparked by a Walker dunk, to take a commanding 64-54 advantage. FMU connected on 14 of 18 free throws, while Anderson missed its only two free throw attempts of the night.
In Saturday’s other contests, the UNC Pembroke women (2-0) defeated Coker College (0-2) 79-44 behind 21 points and 10 rebounds from forward Tasha Stotler, and the Fayetteville State men (2-1) beat Coker (0-2) 69-53 as the Broncos forced 26 Coker turnovers.
The FMU men will return to action on Tuesday with a 7:30 p.m. game at Mount Olive College. The Patriot women will play host to USC Upstate on Nov. 30.
