Pirates Bombard Patriots from long range for 75-59 win

SAVANNAH, GA. – Sophomore guard Jamaal Galloway drained six three-pointers en route to a game-high 20 points and Timmonsville product Bryan Taylor added 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead Armstrong Atlantic State University to a 75-59 victory over Francis Marion University, Wednesday evening (Jan. 4) in Peach Belt Conference men's action.

AASU (9-2, 3-1) wins its fifth straight game, while FMU (6-4, 1-2) has its three-game winning streak snapped.

Senior forward Michael Carter led Francis Marion with 14 points, while senior guard Michael Jenkins added 12 points on four three-pointers.

FMU owned a 24-20 lead following a layup by freshman Akeene Coakley with 7:02 left in the first stanza.  AASU then scored 12 of the game’s next 14 points, aided by a trio of three-pointers by Galloway, to take a 32-26 advantage.  The lead grew to 40-28 before Jenkins hit a three-pointer just before halftime to pull FMU to within 40-31 at intermission.

A three-pointer by Vony Rivers brought Francis Marion to within 43-36 four minutes into the second half, but the Pirates scored seven straight points to go ahead 50-36.  The lead would balloon to 67-44 following a Galloway three-pointer with 8:44 remaining.

A 12-2 spurt by the Patriots cut the margin to 69-56 after a Coakley three-pointer with 4:28 left.  Following an AASU basket by Taylor, FMU sophomore Rodrick Burton drained a three-pointer to further cut the deficit to 71-59 with 3:32 on the clock.  However, FMU would not score again, missing its final four shots from the field.

FMU launched 36 three-point attempts, third-most in team history, and made nine.  AASU was 13 of 24 from beyond the arc and 18 of 22 from the free throw line, while the Patriots managed only six of 10 charity tosses.  Galloway connected on six of 11 long-range shots.

FMU hurt its comeback effort by shooting 26.3 percent (10 of 38) over the final 20 minutes.

Francis Marion returns home to host Georgia College & State University , Saturday at 4 p.m. in a key PBC contest.
