First-Place Bobcats Down Patriot Men 71-66
FLORENCE, S.C. – Senior guard Ronnie Dennis scored 15 of his team-high 18 points in the second half to lead Georgia College & State University to a 71-66 Peach Belt Conference win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 7) in men's action.

GC&SU (8-3, 5-0) wins its sixth straight game and remains atop the PBC standings, while FMU (6-5, 1-3) drops it second consecutive conference contest.

Senior swingman Vony Rivers led Francis Marion with 21 points, while senior forward George Walker added 15 points, and Michael Carter and Raymond Dorsey each tallied 10 points and eight rebounds. Walker was only two of seven from the floor, but equaled the second-best free throw shooting night in team history by canning all 11 of his charity tosses.

Sophomore guard Jay Warden came off the GC&SU bench to score a career-high 10 points. Senior Jeremy Mayweather added nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

FMU led 9-5 five minutes into the game, but the Bobcats scored 15 straight points to take a 20-9 advantage midway through the first stanza. GC&SU led 35-23 at intermission.

The Bobcat lead grew to 15 points (40-25) early in the second half, but the Patriots gradually began chipping away at the deficit.   The GC&SU advantage was 50-41 when Walker started a 13-2 Patriot run with four free throws. The spurt was capped by a Rivers’ three-pointer that gave FMU a 54-52 lead with 8:27 left in the game.

GC&SU responded with a 7-0 run to retake the lead for good. Shejdie Childs finished the run with a three-pointer that put the Bobcats up 59-54. FMU trailed only 63-59 with four minutes remaining, but Walker misfired on a three-pointer and the Patriots turned the ball over, before the Bobcats scored four straight points to lead 67-59 with 1:55 left on the clock.

GC&SU hit 10 of 26 three-point attempts, but aided FMU by missing 11 of 24 free throws.

FMU will play host to PBC foe USC Aiken, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
