Ross Sends Patriot Women to 53-49 Loss
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior center Yakeeshia Ross tallied 16 points and nine rebounds to lead USC Upstate to a 53-49 Peach Belt Conference win over Francis Marion University, Wednesday night (Jan. 25) in women's action.
USC Upstate improves to 10-7 overall and 7-3 in the PBC, while sweeping the season series from FMU. The Patriots, who recently won four straight conference contests to move into second place, have now dropped three straight to fall to 7-9 and 5-5.
Senior Danielle Moore led Francis Marion with 17 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore center Shonelle Downer added 10 points and six rebounds. Moore was three-of-three from the foul line, FMU’s only attempts from the charity stripe.
Shanita Porter came off the USC Upstate bench to chip in 13 points and nine rebounds.
USC Upstate led by as many as eight points in the first half, but a 7-0 FMU run to close the stanza cut the margin to 30-29 at halftime. All three of Francis Marion’s free throw attempts came in the opening 11 minutes.
FMU claimed a 43-41 lead with 7:47 remaining after an offensive stick-back by Moore. The Lady Spartans responded with a 7-0 run to take the lead for good at 48-43 with 3:54 left. A three-pointer by sophomore Renee Guilliams brought FMU to within 51-49 with 11 ticks on the clock, but USC Upstate’s Shannon Pallardy sealed the win with two free throws with nine seconds remaining.
FMU managed to hit only four of 20 three-point attempts and shot just 34.4 percent overall from the field.
Francis Marion will play host to Lander University on Girl Scout Day, Saturday at 2 p.m.
