DAHLONEGA, GA. - North Georgia College & State University hit 10 of 12 free throws in overtime to swipe a 104-99 Peach Belt Conference victory from Francis Marion University, Wednesday night (Feb. 1) in men's action.
Senior guard Vony Rivers led Francis Marion (8-11, 3-9) with a career-high 28 points, while George Walker and Raymond Dorsey each added 16 points, Michael Jenkins 15, and Michael Carter 11 points and eight rebounds.
The backcourt tandem of Matt and Mark Causey combined for 55 points, 17 rebounds, and 13 assists. Matt Causey tallied 31 points, while Mark Causey recorded 24 points, 15 rebounds, and seven assists. North Georgia improves to 11-8 overall and 7-6 in the PBC.
FMU trailed 42-37 at intermission, but the Patriots rallied in the second stanza to lead by as many as 13 points, 64-51, following a basket by Carter with 11:02 remaining. With seven minutes left, the FMU lead was nine points at 68-59, and with only 1:49 on the clock, a Walker jumper in the lane put the Patriots ahead 78-70.
Two Rivers' free throws with 57 seconds left gave Francis Marion an 82-75 advantage, but North Georgia's Buzz Wehunt capped a wild final minute with a three-pointer to knot the score at 88-88 with two ticks remaining.
In the extra period, North Georgia broke a 96-96 deadlock with a 7-0 spurt and FMU was not able to recover.
