FLORENCE, S.C. – Junior forward Tasha Stotler scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead UNC Pembroke over a cold-shooting Francis Marion University squad 61-44, Monday night (Feb. 6) in Peach Belt Conference women's action.
Reserve forward Lauren Lingenfelter was the only other Lady Brave in double figures with 10 points as UNCP improved to 13-7 overall and 8-5 in the PBC.
A win on Monday for FMU (8-11, 6-7) would have tied the Patriots with UNCP for fourth place in the PBC, but Francis Marion managed to hit only 30.2 percent of its shots. The Patriots also managed only two free throw attempts for the game, making one.
Senior forward Danielle Moore led FMU with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Kirby Marsh added nine points.
UNCP scored the game’s first eight points and never trailed, leading 27-21 at intermission.
Francis Marion closed the gap to 33-30 on a three-pointer by Brittany Young with 15:26 left, but the Lady Braves answered with a 17-3 run to grab an insurmountable 50-33 lead with 8:24 remaining. UNCP’s largest lead came at 56-37 on a Lingenfelter layup with five minutes on the clock.
FMU, which played only seven players, was outscored 24-6 by the UNCP bench. The Lady Braves also canned 11 of 12 free throws.
FMU will entertain Armstrong Atlantic State University, Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., and UNC Pembroke will host Georgia College & State University, also on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
