GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Sophomore Colin Floyd carded a final-round 75 to record a Top 12 finish and Francis Marion University ended up in a four-way tie for ninth place in the team standings following Sunday's final round of the 37th Furman University Intercollegiate Tournament presented by Verizon Wireless at the Furman University Golf Course.
The University of Maryland’s Blaine Peffley shot a five-under-par 67 to claim individual medalist honors and give the Terps (289-289-289=867) the team title.
Maryland, who carded a one-over-par 289 in each of the tournament’s three rounds, finished 12 strokes ahead of second-place Chattanooga (299-286-294=879) and 18 strokes better than third-place Samford University (885). Wofford College (886) and Furman (889) rounded out the top five, followed by East Carolina University (895); University of Iowa (896); Winthrop University (906); FMU, Furman "B", Western Carolina University, and Davidson College (all at 907); Marshall University (909), Elon University (910); Virginia Tech (911), Charleston Southern University (917), and Appalachian State University (936).
Floyd fired rounds of 74, 71, and 75 to finish at four-over-par 220 and in a three-way tie for 12th position. Other Patriots golfers included senior Aengus McAllister (73-75-76=224) tied for 27th, Luke Hart (78-73-83=234) and Adam Hart (79-76-79=234) tied for 72nd, and Andrew Pitcher (79-80-78=237) tied for 237. McAllister's tournament play included 12 birdies and two eagles, both equaling the second-highest total in the 99-player field.
Peffley (70-69-67=206) used seven birdies and fired a 31 on the back nine during a breezy final round to claim medalist honors by six strokes over Western Carolina’s Matt Cook (70-72-70=212). The three-round total of 206 marks the lowest winning score since Furman’s Todd White posted a 206 to win the 1989 Furman Intercollegiate.
Francis Marion will return to action at the Wofford College Invitational, April 3-4, in Spartanburg. The Patriots are 61-52-5 in this their first year of transitioning to become an NCAA Division I member, after competing in Division II for the past 14 seasons
