WINDSOR, COLO. – Although bettering Saturday's second-round score by two strokes, Francis Marion University fell to third place after Sunday's final round at the Division I Independent Men's Golf Championships. The 54-hole event was played on the par 72, 7,264-yard Pelican Lakes Golf & Country Club course in Windsor, Colo.
FMU led the team standings by five strokes after the opening round and was in second place, one shot off the pace, after Saturday's second round. However, following Sunday's 299 team score, FMU found itself looking up to both host University of Northern Colorado and South Dakota State University in the team standings.
Northern Colorado finished the tournament with a 873 score, followed by S.D. State (881), Francis Marion (884), University of Texas Pan American and North Dakota State University (895), Utah Valley State College (901), and Sacramento State (919).
Senior Aengus McAllister and freshman Ronan O'Connor both carded final-round 74s to pace the Patriot golfers. McAllister's 216 (70-72-74) tournament tally tied him for fourth place. Other Patriot golfers included sophomore Jacob Tveit tied for 14th at 224 (73-78-73), senior Luke Hart (72-75-78) and O'Connor (74-77-74) tied for 18th at 225, and senior Adam Hart tied for 21st at 226. Adam Hart was the first round leader after shooting a 69 on Friday, but he followed with scores of 77 on Saturday and 80 on Sunday.
Nic Van Vuuren of Utah Valley State earned medalist honors with a 6-under-par 210 score. His final-round 72, followed rounds of 70 and 68.
The Patriots end their season with a 67-63-5 record, while the school completed its first year of transitioning from NCAA Division II to Division I affiliation.
