Fortune's goals lead FMU past Campbell 2-0

FLORENCE, SC - Junior Ashley Fortune scored a pair of first-half goals to lead Francis Marion University to a 2-0 preseason exhibition win over Campbell University, Thursday afternoon (Aug. 17) in women's college soccer action.

The Patriots open their 2006 season Aug. 25 at UNC Charlotte.

Fortune opened the scoring at 18:46 with a 10-yard shot into an open goal.  Jody Rhoderick started the play with a long pass up the right sideline to freshman Angela Salem, who crossed the ball to Fortune.

The margin doubled to 2-0 when Kiersten Nedervelt sent a long pass over the top to Fortune and the Bothell, Wash., native scored on a 12-yard shot from a tough angle on the left side.

Francis Marion outshot Campbell 13-3, including 8-0 in the opening half.  Senior goalkeeper Samar Azem recorded six saves for Campbell.  Junior Jacque Sutphin played the first 72:30 in goal for FMU, while freshman Emily Brandenburg played the final 17:30.  Brandenburg posted Francis Marion's lone save.
