EMMITSBURG, MD. -- Freshman midfielder Kirby Stenard scored a pair of first-half goals to lead Francis Marion University to a 2-1 win over Mount Saint Mary's University, Sunday afternoon (Sept. 3) in women's soccer action at the MSM Soccer Field.
FMU (1-3) collects its first victory of the year, while the Mount falls to 0-3.
Mount Saint Mary's had the first scoring chance of the day, but Karyn Farrar's shot trickled just wide of the goal five minutes into the match. The Patriots answered when Stenard converted an Angela Salem cross at the 10:31 mark of the first half. Stenard then staked her team to a 2-0 lead at the 28:37 mark with her second goal of the match. A Mount player tried to clear the ball, but Stenard stepped in and her ricochet shot beat Mount goalkeeper Anna Lebo.
After being outshot 8-1 in the first half, the Mount picked up its play in the second stanza. Sophomore Meghan Haspert put the Mountaineers on the scoreboard when she buried a shot from just outside the penalty box to cut the deficit to 2-1 with 31:57 left in the match. Mount Saint Mary's had a couple of opportunities to tie the game, but shots by Jenn Baker and Nicki Togno sailed over the cross bar.
Francis Marion held a 13-6 advantage in shots and each team had one corner kick. Lebo made five saves in the loss for the Mount, while Patriot junior Jacque Sutphin made two saves while earning the victory.
FMU returns to action on Sept. 13, when the Patriots play host to Charleston Southern University at 4 p.m.
