FLORENCE, SC – Senior middlehitter Lezlie Logan paced a balanced attack with 15 kills as Francis Marion University swept to a 32-30, 30-24, 30-20 victory over NCAA Division I opponent Charleston Southern University, Tuesday evening (Sept. 5) in women’s volleyball action.

The Patriots improve to 8-2, while the Lady Bucs fall to 2-5.

FMU freshman Krissy Mordini added 12 kills and 15 digs, while sophomore Allison Good pounded out 10 kills. Sophomore setter Jenna Kaiser handed out 43 assists and dug out 15 balls, while junior Jackie Phiel registered 16 digs, seven kills, and seven service aces – one shy of the school single-match record.

Logan closed to within one of the school’s career record for kills, 1,523 set by Jennifer Grande between 1993 and 1996.

Senior Jenni Shepherd led Charleston Southern with 16 kills and five block assists. Jillian Worby added 10 kills, while setter San Sasan dished out 33 assists and dug out 11 balls. Libero Miki Wilson paced CSU with 17 digs.

CSU rallied from a 20-12 deficit in the opening game to grab a 28-27 advantage. The two squads then traded points, before Mordini ended the game with a kill off a Kaiser assist. FMU gradually pulled away to a 26-17 lead in game two, before the Buccaneers closed to within 28-24. Michelle Settergren ended the game with a kill off another Kaiser set. The Patriots jumped to an early 14-4 in the final game and were never seriously threatened.

Francis Marion plays in the AASU/Chatham Orthopaedic Classic in Savannah, Ga., on Friday and Saturday. CSU plays host to Newberry College for a doubleheader, Saturday at both 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
