SPARTANBURG, SC – Senior Lezlie Logan recorded a game-high 18 kills to lead Francis Marion University past USC Upstate in three games (30-27, 30-24, 30-22), Saturday afternoon (Sept. 16) in Peach Belt Conference women’s volleyball action.
The Patriots improve to 12-4 overall and 2-0 in the PBC, while the Spartans fall to 12-4 and 1-1.
In game one, the Spartans battled the whole game, but a late surge by the Patriots allowed them to seal up the 30-27 victory. In games two and three, a combination of costly errors by the Spartans and the fact that Francis Marion took advantage of those errors helped the Patriots get their 3-0 sweep.
Junior Jackie Phiel added 10 kills and 12 digs for FMU, while sophomore setter Jenna Kaiser tallied 43 assists. Senior libero Jessica Strader, the PBC’s all-time digs leader, dug out 24 balls on Saturday.
After hitting only .098 in a 3-1 win at Lander University on Friday night, the Patriots hit .307 as a team in Saturday’s victory.
Mandy Rupert led USC Upstate with 11 kills, three blocks, and seven digs. Christina McLean added 24 digs, while Holly Mauldin chipped in with 20 assists.
FMU plays at local PBC-rival UNC Pembroke, Wednesday at 7 p.m.
