Bulldogs bite Francis Marion in second half

FLORENCE, SC – Freshmen David Pineiro and Heinze Guttenberger each scored second-half goals to lead Barton College to a 3-1 non-conference win over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Sept. 16) in men’s college soccer action.

Barton improves to 2-1-1, while the Patriots drop to 3-3.

Freshman Chris Tripp put the Bulldogs up 1-0 at the 20:11 mark when he scored on a 10-yard from the close left wing. Tony Fana assisted on the goal. FMU freshman Kyle Clinton knotted the score at 1-1 when he tallied his team-leading fifth goal of 2006 on a rebound shot in the 31st minute.

The score remained tied at halftime. In the second stanza, Pineiro scored his first career goal at 51:02 when he headed in a cross from William Stakes. The margin grew to 3-1 when Guttenberger registered his first career score at 67:17 on a 12-yard shot. Carter Ellis assisted on the final tally.

FMU had a chance to narrow the deficit to one goal in the 87th minute. Jonathan Bartomioli crossed the ball to Clinton in the box, but his sliding shot past Barton goalkeeper Matt Coble was cleared off the goalline by a Bulldog defender.

Coble recorded six saves, while FMU sophomore keeper Nick Krywyj made four stops. The Bulldogs outshot FMU 11-10, although Francis Marion held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Francis Marion plays host to USC Aiken for a Peach Belt Conference match, Wednesday at 4 p.m., while Barton plays at Queens University of Charlotte, the same day at 7 p.m.
