FMU Women tie College of Charleston 0-0

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC - Francis Marion University and the College of Charleston battled to a 0-0 tie in women’s soccer action, Tuesday evening (Sept. 19) at Patriot’s Point.   The match featured a 30-minute lightning delay.

Short-handed Francis Marion, now 4-3-1, was playing its fourth match in seven days.  The Patriots will play host to Western Carolina University, Friday at 4 p.m. on the FMU Soccer Field.

CofC (2-3-1) outshot Francis Marion 15-11, and held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. 

The Cougars outshot FMU 7-3 in the opening 45 minutes.  Both teams increased their offensive effort in the second half and recorded good scoring opportunities. CofC senior Caroline Wertis had her shot in the 76th minute hit the crossbar.   Four of Francis Marion's five shots in the second stanza were on goal, and the other by junior Ashley Fortune hit the post in the 87th minute. 

FMU junior goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin recorded the shutout with seven saves, and ran her scoreless streak to 207:34.   It was her fourth career shutout.  Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Wiggers played the entire match for CofC and registered six saves.
