Patriots find offense down PC 4-1

FLORENCE, SC – Freshman Kirby Stenard scored two goals as the Francis Marion University offense found the back of the net for the first time in four matches and the Patriots downed Presbyterian College 4-1, Wednesday evening (Sept. 27) in women’s soccer action.

Francis Marion pushes its unbeaten string to eight matches and ups its record to 5-3-3. After posting three consecutive scoreless ties, FMU exploded for a season-high four goals in downing the NCAA Division II Blue Hose (3-5-0).   Presbyterian is the only non-Division I opponent on this year’s FMU schedule as the Patriots are in their second year of transitioning to Division I.

Stenard put the Patriots on the board in the third minute, thanks to a double assist from junior Brandi Sutphin and freshman Angela Salem. Only 4:02 into the second stanza, Sutphin doubled the margin to 2-0 with a 35-yard blast following a pass from Salem.

Presbyterian trimmed the margin to 2-1 at 56:04 when Ginny Wolfe scored on a long 30-yard shot.

Junior Ashley Fortune gave FMU a 3-1 advantage when she placed the ball just inside the left post at 58:28. Salem and Jody Rhoderick assisted on the goal. Salem’s three helpers were one shy of the school record.

Stenard finished the scoring with her second tally, and team-leading sixth goal of the season, in the 76th minute. Fortune assisted on the give-and-go scoring play.

Patriot junior goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin extended her school-record scoreless minutes streak to 483:38 before Wolfe’s score. Sutphin recorded four saves, before freshman keeper Emily Brandenburg played the final nine minutes.

Presbyterian keeper Erin Sinkuler registered six saves as FMU out shot the Blue Hose 17-11 and led 2-1 in corner kicks.

FMU will make its first-ever trip to Clemson University on Sunday to play the Tigers in a 2 p.m. match.
