CLEMSON, SC -- Nuria Zufia scored one goal and had one assist and teammate Lia Schendel had two assists in leading Clemson University to a 4-0 win over Francis Marion University in a women's intercollegiate soccer match, Sunday afternoon (Oct. 1).
With the win, Clemson is now 6-5 on the year, and Francis Marion falls to 5-4-3 and sees its eight match unbeaten streak snapped. It was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Clemson scored all four goals in the first half. Zufia scored in the 10th minute with assists by Schendel and Julie Bolt. It was Zufia's fourth goal of the year and Bolt's sixth assist of the year.
Kelly Schneider scored her first goal of the season with assists by Meghan Smith and Katie Vogel at the 15:22 mark giving the Lady Tigers a 2-0 advantage. In the 24th minute, Molly Franklin scored her third goal of the season with assists by Schendel and Zufia. Fraser Gerth scored on a take away and recorded her first goal of the season in the 39th minute, giving the Lady Tigers a 4-0 lead before the half.
The Tigers out shot the Patriots 23-2 with FMU junior Ashley Fortune registering both of the Francis Marion's attempts. Clemson also led 6-1 in corner kicks.
FMU junior goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin recorded a season-high 11 saves.
Clemson will play at Virginia Tech on Thursday at 7 p.m., while FMU travels to Longwood College, Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.
